"Sawdust and Solitude"
In 1928 the original ranch parcel and cabin was purchased. Over the next 80 years my Great-Grandma Villard, Grandpa Clair and Uncle Albert have kept the ranching tradition alive. The ranch has been home to Villard summer sheep herds since the first summer it was put to use in 1929. The ranch is rotationally grazed by cattle, sheep and horses during the Summer and Fall months. The migratory pattern for deer and elk happens to run right through the middle of that. The deer and elk herds are the first to make their way onto the tender Spring grasses and they are usually the last to leave as the snow begins to deepen. The landscape is dotted with natural spring fed and run-off ponds and the Fortification Creek runs through as well. Just over the hill is the 17-acre Freeman Reservoir located in Routt National Forest. The landscape has an amazing range of species. Native prairie grasses and abundant sage brush flats give way to thick scrub oak, willows, service berry and chokecherry trees. Across the lush green hay fields is the cool canopy of Quaking Aspen and towering Pines. Although you will surely want to come for the sport of hunting, you will find the sights, sounds and relaxation of the ranch to be a welcome change to the busy pace of everyday life. The wildlife viewing opportunities are endless, from the smallest ground squirrels to the largest elk. Eagles, red tailed hawks and hummingbirds among others have made this their home as well. We are sure that this will quickly become a favorite place to anyone who has the chance to experience it. We will surely charge you for the guided hunt...there is no charge for the breathtaking views and unbeatable western hospitality.
